Some stats: 91% of nurses believe the nursing shortage is getting worse and that burnout, poor working conditions, and inadequate pay are the primary causes. 79% of nurses said their units are inadequately staffed and 71% said that improving staffing ratios would have the greatest impact on the nursing shortage. But on his 100th birthday I've been thinking about all he has seen, experienced and influenced around the globe, geopolitically, socially and culturally. A deeply spiritual and genuinely decent man, I can't think of another American so devoted to a life of joyful service. Spawning #MeToo, #TimesUp and #WhyIDidntReport, the ‘Harvey Weinstein Effect’ literally flooded the American consciousness almost every day following those allegations in early October. In the following three months, the U.S. saw over 150 accusations of everything ranging from rape to innuendo, across industries including Hollywood, sports, media, politics and more. While the national conversation and allegations continue, including countless others not in the public eye or ever reported, we are just now beginning to see the conclusion of some cases years later. How Mass Incarceration Deepens Inequality A global pandemic, mass unemployment, racial justice uprising — we see inequalities more clearly than ever. And nowhere is it more felt than within our country’s criminal justice system. Some takeaways from the report, for the Brennan Center for Justice.

Morkies. Cockapoos. Chiweenies. These dogs may not have serious names, but they’re a serious business. Known as ‘hybrid’ or ‘designer’ dogs, these canines are bred with a purpose – to optimize the best qualities of each parent. Unlike some mixed breeds, designer dogs are generally born from two purebred parents. Depending on the qualities of the offspring, one puppy can be like having two dogs in one. Labradoodles, for instance, were first bred from labradors (which are common guide dogs) and poodles (with a low-shed coat) to be hypoallergenic service dogs. Puggles – a cross between a pug and a beagle – usually have a muzzle of a beagle, which can eliminate breathing problems often associated with the short-nosed pug. Not all hybrids are desirable. Designer-dog critics says genetic experimentations are exacerbating the problem of puppy mills. For instance, when a puggle inherits a short snout from a pug and the hunting instincts from the beagle, it may not have a respiratory system that’s equipped to handle all the exercise it needs. These unwanted dogs often end up in shelters. Despite the controversy, designer breeds have made a mark on the $60 billion pet market by commanding high prices that often exceed their purebred counterparts. And so long as the market continues to demand them, cavachons, pekeapoos and schnoodles are here to stay. For TIME and time.com

From the primary elections in 2011 for almost a whole year, the word “gaffe” was being thrown around almost daily. Presidential candidates had been scrutinized by the media for uninformed blunders or miscalculated one-liners not only memorable to the voting public, but some so damaging their campaigns could not be resurrected. And social media provoked gaffe coverage; no political figure is safe or immune from it. I was really curious to make a graphic on its history, and how it played out particularly in this election. At the time, I thought it was going to be either the most innovative idea ever, or the biggest disaster in decades. Some have now been removed and others stay, but a study showed that of all the water saving strategies used in LA in 2010, mandatory restrictions of water use — essentially stopping people from watering their lawns — saved the most water.
